An elegant phone with the latest and greatest in mobile technology, the Nokia 6131 is definitely going to be a show-stopper. Some of the many features of the Nokia 6131 include a 16.7 million colour display, one-touch push-to-open button, 1.3mpx digital camera, MP3 player, light indications, and microSD expandable memory.

The Nokia 6131 phone is one of very few to be announced with a 16.7 million colour display as part of their feature list. The 16.7 million colours finally brings “true” colour to a mobile device – such colour that you would experience on a computer LCD. To put it in numbers perspective, the 6131’s internal display supports a total of 16,777,216 colours. Most other handsets only support 262,144 colours – the 6131 has sixty four times that quality!  Not only is the 6131’s display capable of these colours its also massive at a total of 240 x 320 pixels.

The perfect match for a perfect LCD display is a high quality camera. As though not as high as I would have hoped for, the 6131 does have a 1.3mpx digital camera (1280 x 960 pixel resolution still images). The camera application is full screen and can be used on the internal and external displays. The dedicated camera key should also make things easier. The 6131 also has PictBridge for direct USB-to-printer printing, removing the need for a PC as the go-between.

Multimedia functions on the 6131 include such features as a video and audio player, FM stereo radio with RDS, video streaming, and 64-chord poly phonic ring tones. As well as the regular ring tones, you can also have video ring tones – the handset gives you the ability to assign a video clip as a ringing tone. Streaming 3GPP video is supported on the handset over an active over-the-air (OTA) protocol.

Messaging has been upgraded on the 6131 handset. Simple text messaging with recently used contacts log and messaging groups has finally arrived in a Nokia handset (Sony Ericsson have been using recently used contacts forever!). Access your work and personal e-mail accounts on the 6131 with the dedicated e-mail application. It supports SMTP, POP3 and IMAP4 e-mail servers as well as e-mail messages with attachments. Xpress audio messaging and instant messaging is also included, all with T9 predictive text.

The memory on the 6131 has been divided up to ensure the best usage. There is 32MB of flash memory and 11MB of RAM. Dividing all the flash memory up there is 10MB for user data , 10MB put aside for gallery and applications, and 1MB for contacts, notes, and calendar entries. The microSD memory card slot can support up to 2GB cards.

USB, Bluetooth, and infrared technology is all crammed into this latest Nokia handset. The USB 2.0 protocol is available through the Pop-Port™ interface at the bottom of the handset. Local and remote SyncML synchronization is supported. EGDE and GRPS OTA data protocols can be used to browse WAP sites via the integrated xHTML browser. Push-to-talk is also connected via one of these data pipes.

The 6131 has massive buttons – perfect for messaging and general use of the handset. The handset is planned for the 2nd quarter of this year and will ship with the basics as well as a stereo headset.
